2017年2月、金正男は白昼堂々、猛毒の神経剤「VX」を顔に塗られて殺された。実行犯として逮捕されたのは、ベトナム人とインドネシア人の女性二人。ドアン・ティ・フォンとシティ・アイシャによる暗殺の模様は空港の監視カメラに捉えられ、一気に世界を駆け巡る。日本でも大々的に報じられたこの騒動はその後、二人が自分たちはただ「いたずら動画」を撮るために雇われただけだと主張したことで、さらなる衝撃をもたらした。
彼女たちの信じ難い主張は真実なのか？ だとしたら、いかにして北朝鮮工作員は二人を暗殺犯に仕立て上げたのか。映画は、彼女たちの無罪を信じ、証拠を積み上げていった弁護団の突き止めた真実、そして、貧しい女性たちの「有名になりたい」「お金が欲しい」という願望につけ込み、巧妙な罠を仕掛けた北朝鮮の闇を探り出す。
本作を手掛けたのは、ホロコーストの生存者にしてアメリカで最も有名なセックスセラピストの人生に迫った『おしえて！ドクター・ルース』（2019）や、結婚を男女間に限定する法律は憲法違反だと訴訟を起こした同性カップルを追った『ジェンダー・マリアージュ 〜全米を揺るがした同性婚裁判〜』（2014）などを手がけた、気鋭監督のライアン・ホワイト。北朝鮮の都市・平壌や、逮捕された二人の故郷であるインドネシアとベトナム、そして裁判の行われているクアラルンプールの法廷をめぐり、命をかけて戦う女性たちの物語を紡ぎ出した。（編集部・入倉功一）
