高度経済成長期を支え、今もこの地区に暮らす元労働者らに娯楽を提供しようと、女性カメラマンが往年の名画を上映する喫茶店を2月に開店した。イベントなども計画しており、「人と記憶をつなぐ場にしたい」と意気込んでいる。
JR南千住駅から徒歩5分ほどの距離にある映画喫茶「泪橋ホール」（台東区）。山谷で食堂を営んでいた両親を持つ多田裕美子さん（53）が店主を務める。親に教わったギョーザなどを軽食に出す傍ら、時代劇やミュージカルなど国内外の作品を上映している。
上映時の客席は25席ほどで観賞料は800円。年金や生活保護の受給者は500円の割引料金にした。スクリーン間近で観賞し「元気になった」と語る年配男性や、「次がいいシーンなんだよ」などと懐かしむ声も。かつて、日雇い暮らしのつらさを忘れさせてくれた名画。「黄金期の作品を見てきた世代だから思い出深いんでしょうね」と多田さんはほほ笑む。
1990年代末、多田さんは公園の一角で100人以上の労働者を撮影。3年前、「山谷 ヤマの男」（筑摩書房）を出版した。「怖そうなおじさんでも話すと人懐こかった」。福祉施設を手伝う中で、高齢化した元労働者の多くが生活に困窮する現状に触れた。「少しでも山谷に貢献できれば」と奮起。クラウドファンディングで運営資金を募ったところ、約90万円が集まった。
一帯は近年、都心へのアクセスが良いことからマンションやビジネスホテルが増え、若者や外国人旅行客も行き交う街になった。街の風景が変わりゆく中、多田さんは「山谷の記憶をさまざまな人が語り合える空間にしたい」と、トークイベントや音楽ライブなども考えている。

閉館した浅草の映画館、においだけが難点だった。（ｗ
浅草中映劇場とか、ホームレスと弁当と酒の臭いが入り混じってカオスだったからな。

それにしても、吉祥寺のあそこは相当消防法だの保健所だの上映権だの大変だったみたいだが、ここはよくクリアしたな。
