映画『ジョジョ・ラビット』で第92回アカデミー賞脚色賞を受賞したタイカ・ワイティティ監督が、大友克洋の人気作品『AKIRA』の実写版について、オスカー受賞に関連したVarietyのインタビュー内で「それをやるのが僕なのかはわからない」と言及している。
制作延期を繰り返していた実写版『AKIRA』をめぐっては、昨年、ワイティティ監督がメガホンを取り、2021年5月21日に全米公開されると報じられていた。しかしワイティティ監督は、同サイトに対して、マーベル映画『マイティ・ソー バトルロイヤル』に続く『ソー：ラブ・アンド・サンダー（原題） / Thor: Love and Thunder』を手掛ける関係で、撮影が2年延期になったと証言。「今は全てが保留になっている」と語った。
では、『ソー』の次回作が『AKIRA』なのか。しかしワイティティ監督は「2年後には何をしているかわからないな。僕は2日後に自分が何をするかもわからないんだからね」と返答。そのうえで「（実写版『AKIRA』は）最終的に作られることになるだろう。ただ、それをやるのが僕なのかはわからないってことなんだ」と、将来的に監督をする確証がないことを明かしている。
ヒットメイカーにしてオスカー受賞者ともなったワイティティ監督の才能は各所で引っ張りだこで、現在は新作『ネクスト・ゴール・ウィンズ（原題）/ Next Goal Wins』のポストプロダクション中で、ジェームズ・ガン監督の『スーサイド・スクワッド』新作には俳優として出演。また先月には The Hollywood Reporter が『スター・ウォーズ』シリーズ新作の企画開発にも携わっていると報道したばかりだ。『スター・ウォーズ』の件についてワイティティ監督は「それが理にかなっていて、キャリアを自殺に追い込むものじゃないと感じられれば、どんな映画だってやりたいよ」と同サイトに語っている。
『AKIRA』は、第三次世界大戦による新型爆弾の投下から復興しつつある2019年のネオ東京が舞台の大ヒットコミックを、原作者である大友監督が自らアニメーション映画化した作品。現在も世界中のファンを魅了し続けており、作品の舞台となった2019年には、日本における新アニメ化プロジェクトも発表された。（編集部・入倉功一）

外国人が英語で話してアキラもネオトーキョーもあったもんじゃないだろ。
日本人で日本語でやってもちゃっちくなるだけだし、
アニメまでで納めとくのが丁度いいんだよ。

影響力が大きかった作品ほど、その後色んな作品でインスパイアされまくって色んなバリエーションや手法真似て発展形みたいなのが作られるから、後々オリジナル見るとよくある作品、なんか物足りないなって感じる様になるんだよな
AKIRAもそういう作品でしょ
今更忠実に作ってもダメだと思う

実写にすれば面白くなるかなあ 大友克洋の絵だからこその作品だと思うし
製作費もかなりかかりそうな上に今やったところでそこまで観客が食いつくかは疑問だな
