ネットフリックスでは、アマゾンプライムやDisney+、Huluなどと比べて、より多くの喫煙の描写を含む番組が配信されていると、研究者たちは指摘している。
2020年に6200万世帯でストリーミング配信された「クイーンズ・ギャンビット」には、220のタバコの描写が含まれており、別の人気ドラマの「アンブレラ・アカデミー」にも205のタバコ描写が含まれていた。両番組ともすべてのエピソードにタバコの描写があったとされている。
2019年に大ヒットを記録したネットフリックスの「ストレンジャー・シングス」には721のタバコ描写があったが、2020年には新シーズンがリリースされなかった。しかし、Truth Initiativeの調査で、15〜24歳の視聴者の30.1％が、2020年中に同番組をイッキ見したと回答しており、古い番組も若者の喫煙のイメージに影響を与えることが示された。
British Medical Journalによると、世界の13歳から15歳の子どもの5人に1人が喫煙者で、毎日10万人もの子どもが新たに喫煙を開始しているという。
米国の公衆衛生局によると、映画を通じて最も喫煙イメージにさらされている若者は、最も喫煙イメージにさらされていない若者に比べて、喫煙を始める可能性が約2倍になるという。カリフォルニア大学サンフランシスコ校のSmokefree Mediaプロジェクトの試算で、R指定を更新して若者が映画で見る喫煙場面を年間平均275件から10件以下に減らした場合、若者の喫煙率は18％減少するとされている。
しかし、Truth Initiativeによると、2021年11月時点でテレビ利用全体の28％をストリーミングメディアが占めており、2020年には約2700万人の若者が喫煙や電子タバコのベイピングのイメージにさらされていた。
Smokefree Mediaのデータで、“最も喫煙場面が多い若者向け映画”とされる2005年の「ロンゲスト・ヤード」では、合計187本のタバコが吸われていた。
2015年にディズニーは、スクリーン上での喫煙を禁止するポリシーをルーカスフィルム、マーベル、ピクサーの映画に拡大した。これを受けて、エマ・ストーンは2021年公開の映画「クルエラ（Cruella）」で、オリジナル版では常にタバコを手放さないキャラクターとして描かれたクルエラを、タバコを吸わずに演じた。ストーンはニューヨーク・タイムズの取材に「私は喫煙を助長したくないし、子犬の毛皮を剥ぐことも助長したくない」と語った。
