「ゲーム・オブ・スローンズ」（2011-2019）の前日譚スピンオフドラマ「ハウス・オブ・ザ・ドラゴン」のシーズン2製作が正式に決定した。米Deadlineなどが報じている。
「ハウス・オブ・ザ・ドラゴン」は、「ゲーム・オブ・スローンズ」の原作者ジョージ・R・R・マーティンの小説『炎と血』（早川書房）に基づき、「ゲーム・オブ・スローンズ」の200年前を舞台にターガリエン家の物語を壮大なスケールで描き出す物語。第1話『ドラゴンの後継者』は2022年8月22日に日米同時配信され、米国ではHBOとHBO Maxで合計986万人もの視聴者数を記録し、HBO史上に残る新記録を樹立。現在までの累計視聴者数は2000万人以上と発表されている。
以前からHBOは、第1話の視聴率次第ではすぐにシーズン2を発注する準備があると伝えられていた。このたび予告通り、第1話の配信からおよそ4日後にシーズン2の製作が決定したことになる。
HBOのドラマ部門を統括するフランチェスカ・オルシ氏は、「シーズン1でのチームの達成を大変誇りに思います。素晴らしいキャスト＆スタッフは大きな挑戦を引き受け、あらゆる期待に応え、すでに“必見の作品”として確立した番組を届けてくれました。ターガリエン家の壮大な物語をシーズン2で描き続けられることをとても楽しみにしています」とのコメントを発表した。
シリーズの製作総指揮を務めているのは、ライアン・コンダル（脚本）、ジョージ・R・R・マーティン（原作・脚本）、ミゲル・サポチニク（監督）の3名。オルシ氏はコメントの中で3人の功績も大きく称えた。
