【シリコンバレー=佐藤浩実、ニューヨーク=清水石珠実】米メディア大手ウォルト・ディズニーは14日、動画配信サービス「Hulu（フールー）」の経営権を完全に握ったと発表した。米同業コムキャストとの間で、同社が持つ3割強のHulu株を5年後以降に買い取り、全株を取得する。経営権は即時に譲り受けることでコムキャストと合意した。動画配信最大手「ネットフリックス」の対抗馬とも呼ばれるHuluを傘下に収め、ディズニーは動画配信事業を大幅に強化する。

ディズニーのボブ・アイガー最高経営責任者（CEO）は14日、米調査会社のイベントで、Huluの支配権を完全に得ることで「複数の動画配信サービスを組み合わせて販売できるようになる」と述べた。

ディズニーは11月に米国で始める「ディズニー＋（プラス）」で映画やドキュメンタリー作品をストリーミング配信するほか、すでにスポーツ番組を専門に配信する「ESPN＋（プラス）」を運営している。ここにHuluが加わる。コンテンツの幅が広がるだけでなく、利用者は予算や好みに合わせて各種のサービスを組み合わせることができるようになる。

コムキャストが持つHulu株33%は2024年1月以降にディズニーが買い取る。買収時に、第三者機関を通じて正当な買収価格を決める。だが、買収総額が最低でも58億ドル（約6360億円）になる保証をつけた。

ディズニーは動画配信を「ダイレクト・トゥ・コンシューマー（消費者に直接届ける）事業」と呼び、次の柱に育てようとしている。同部門の売上高は1〜3月期で10億ドル弱だったが、コンテンツや配信インフラ整備のための投資が先行し利益は出ていない。

2007年のHulu設立には、ディズニーとコムキャストに加えて、21世紀フォックスとタイムワーナー（現在は通信大手AT&T傘下のワーナーメディア）のメディア大手4社が参加した。その後、ディズニーがフォックスの主力事業を買収し、AT&Tが約1割の保有株を放出したため、ディズニーの出資比率は7割に近づいていた。

ディズニーに続いて、ワーナーメディアやコムキャスト傘下のNBCユニバーサルも独自の動画配信サービスの立ち上げを準備中だ。メディア企業が各自配信サービスを立ち上げ、コンテンツの囲い込みにカジを切る中、メディア大手が共同で設立したHuluは役割を大きく変えようとしている。
