映画『ジョーカー』でオスカーに輝いた俳優ホアキン・フェニックスが、ニューヨークでの新型コロナウイルスの感染爆発を受け、
同州の囚人を解放するようアンドリュー・クオモ州知事に訴えている。

ホアキンの直訴動画が掲載されたのは、「Release Aging People in Prison Campaign（高齢の受刑者を解放するキャンペーン）」の
Twitterだ。ホアキンは「刑務所でのコロナウイルスのまん延は、わたしたち皆の健康と安全を脅かしています。収監されていれば、
ソーシャルディスタンスや衛生状態をよくすることもできません。受刑者たち、そして刑務所で働く人々が病気になってウイルスを
広げるのを防ぐため、リーダーたちは出来ること全てをしなくてはなりません。わたしは、ニューヨーク州知事のアンドリュー・クオモに、
刑務所にいるニューヨーカーたちに恩赦を与えるよう要求します。多くの人の命が彼の行動にかかっています。誰も、刑務所で
新型コロナウイルスによって死ぬべきではないのです」と訴えた。
ホアキンが解放を訴えているのはどういった囚人なのかは定かではないが、クオモ州知事の秘書はTMZ.comに対し、この件には
すでに取り組んでいるとコメント。「55歳以上で刑の残りが90日以内であり、犯した罪が暴力的な重罪もしくは性犯罪でない囚人」を
釈放するプロセスは始まっていると語った。
ホアキン以外にも、『ラ・ラ・ランド』に出演した歌手のジョン・レジェンドや、モデル・女優のエミリー・ラタコウスキー（『ゴーン・ガール』）ら
セレブたちが囚人解放を訴えている。
