片渕須直（すなお）監督（５９）は次回作の準備のため２月から、とある海辺の街に滞在していたが、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大であらゆる予定が狂った。だが、東京から離れて構想を続けてきた次回作がどうあるべきかが見えてきたという。舞台は平安時代。人々は疫病に苦しめられていた…。海辺の街にとどまっている片渕監督に、電話で話を聞いた。
「この世界の片隅に」と「この世界の（さらにいくつもの）片隅に」の両方でつないだ映画館での連続上映が１２５９日で、１日だけ途切れてしまいました。新型コロナの影響で、４月２４日に上映していた映画館が休業せざるを得なくなったからです。これまでなら「うちが上映しますよ」と、どこかの映画館がバトンをつないでくれたのですが、それもできなくなってしまったということなんですね。
次の映画の準備のため２月から東京を離れ、静かな土地にきています。平安時代の物語なのですが、あの頃、日本には疫病が次々と襲来していました。こういう事態になり、まさにそれを目の当たりにしている気がします。千年前は感染症の知識などなくて、「病気を連れたもののけが通る」などの風説が流布し、皆が家に閉じ籠もった。そんな人々をリアルに感じています。
新型コロナについては分からないことも多いけれど、われわれは千年前の人たちよりずっと知識を持つことができます。合理的判断で、自覚的に行動できるはず。決して強制ではなく、歩調を合わせられるはずなんですよね。
われわれは、千年前の人々や戦時下にあって自分たちで判断する自由を持たなかった「この世界−」の主人公、すずさんたちとは違うと思いたいですね。
この次回作を形にするには大勢の人手が必要で、昨年９月にアニメーション制作会社を設立しましたが、スタッフの採用試験をどう進めるかで、難航しています。日本のアニメ制作は、以前からリモート（遠隔）制作で、その結果、対面で指導ができずに人が育たなくなった。スタッフが１カ所に集まり、対面で同じ目標に向かえるよう新会社を設立したのですが、コロナに阻害され、面接試験がリモートになってしまっています。
ブルーレイや配信で日に２、３本の映画を見て“栄養”とし、またこの新型コロナの事態と照らし合わせることで次回作の狙いが定まってきた気がしています。どんな映画とも違う形、手触りの作品になりそうです。（聞き手 石井健）
