今回、発表されたラインアップは、今春の選考会を経て選ばれたもので、カンヌ映画祭が承認したことを証明する「カンヌレーベル」として、他の映画祭での招待上映や商業上映の際にスタンプをつけることが認められる。通常、最高賞パルムドールを争うコンペティション部門、ある視点部門、特別招待作品など幾つかのカテゴリーに分けられるが、今回は分けずに一本化して発表された。
河瀬監督は97年に「萌の朱雀」新人監督賞にあたる「カメラドール」、07年には「殯（もがり）の森」河瀬直美＝グランプリを、深田監督は16年に「淵に立つ」が、ある視点部門で審査員賞を、それぞれ受賞しており「FAITHFUL（映画祭に忠実な）」と題された14本に選ばれた。また「アーヤと魔女」は、アニメ部門4本のうちの1本に選ばれた。
カンヌ映画祭事務局は公式サイトで「3月19日に、映画祭を7月初めに開催を延期した。詳細を4月15日までに決定しなければいけなかったが、同13日にフランス政府が夏の間、主要な文化イベントは開催できないと発表した」と説明。開催するとしたら選択肢は秋以降となったが、9月には同じく世界3大映画祭の1つ、ベネチア映画祭（イタリア）と、米アカデミー賞の前哨戦の1つ、トロント映画祭（カナダ）が開催されることもあり、カンヌ映画祭事務局としては「9月の映画祭の開催は問題外。10月、11月の延期も不可能」と判断したと説明した。
また、今年の映画祭の選考に応募してきた長編映画は2067本と、映画祭史上初めて2000本を超えたことを明らかにした。そして「メイン会場のパレで世界初上映、ワールドプレミアが出来なくなった代わりに、それは世界中の劇場や他の国際映画祭で行われなければならない。世界の、他の多くの映画祭がカンヌレーベルを歓迎している」と強調。その上で、サン・セバスチャン映画祭（スペイン）は、同映画祭での賞レースにカンヌレーベルに選ばれた作品も加われるよう、例外的にルールを変えたことも明らかにした。
また、今回の選考に応募した幾つかの作品の中で、監督やプロデューサーが公開を今冬以降に延期することを選択した作品については、翌21年の選考会で再選考するとも説明した。
