ロバート・ジョンソンの「クロスロード伝説」（※十字路に現れる悪魔に魂を担保にブルースの極意を得るという契約を交わしたとされる）をモチーフにした映画『クロスロード』が、1986年3月14日のアメリカ公開から36周年を迎えました。
この映画の記憶に残る名シーンと言えば、主人公ユジーンと、スティーヴ・ヴァイ演じるメタル・ブルース・ギタリスト、ジャック・バトラーのギター対決。ヴァイは、当時のことを先日、ジョー・ボナマッサのポッドキャストに出演した際、語っています。
このギター対決シーンでは、主人公ユジーンのギター演奏の最後の部分も、スティーヴが吹き替え演奏しています。
「それはとても面白い話なんだよ。僕にとって初めての映画だったんだ。もともと（この映画の音楽を担当した）ライ・クーダーが僕に声をかけてきたのは、いろんなギタリストと一緒にやろうとしていたからなんだけど、それはうまくいかなかったんだ。それから僕は脚本を読んだ。僕は演劇が好きなんだよ。最後のほうは台本にどうすればいいか書いてあるんだ。脚本には“ジャック・バトラーがキックオフすると、彼のギターは貨物列車が来るような音がする”と書いてあるんだ。そして、最後のほうにはこう書いてある。“ブルース・プレイヤーが相手だから…”と。おそらくジャック・バトラーの方はブルース・プレイヤーだったんだろう。僕はベストを尽くしたんだ、わかるだろ？[笑]。
ユージンがジャックに勝つ方法は、クラシックの影響を混ぜ始めることなんだ。これがジャック・バトラーを苦しめるんだ。そのために、クラシックの影響を受けつつも、もう少し現代的でブルージーなものに超越するようなものを考えなければならなかったんだ。それで、あの早弾きをしたんだよ。（ユージン役の）ラルフ（マッチオ）がこのリフをやって、それをジャックがやることになるんだ。で、ジャックは完全に迷ってしまうんだ。彼はクラシック音楽を理解してないからね。
全部事前に録音しておいたんだ。シーン全体は14、18時間かかったよ。バーバンクの地に巨大な教会を建ててエキストラを集めたんだ。巨大な悪魔の教会だった。撮影は12日間だったかな…。
ジャックは負けたんだ。（撮影から）1ヶ月後に呼び出されたんだ。監督が全てを見て、僕がひどく負けたとは感じなかったようなんだよ。明らかに負けたとは思えなかったんだ。僕が“みんなは僕が負けたことを知らなければならないよね”と言うと、彼は“いや、君はまだ演奏しているよね”って言っていた（笑）。それで悪魔の教会を全部建て直して、みんなを元に戻したんだ。そのシーンを撮影するために、同じ服を探し、髪を整え、すべてを同じにしなければならなかったから覚えているよ。そして、最初に撮影したときよりもひどい失敗をしたように見えるように、再録音しなければならなかったんだ。これが実際に起こったことだよ。僕は失敗が足りなかったんだ」
Ｑ：そう思っていました。わざと苦労しているようにするのは、見た目以上に難しいことなんですよ。
「そうなんだよ。嘘っぽくなるからね。押しつけがましく見えるし、無理しているように見える。いざ演奏しようとしたとき、“いやいや、わざとそうしているんだろう”となるんだよ。でも、僕はそれを乗り越えたんだ。あの映画がこれほどまでに影響を与えたことは、僕にとって、とても興味深いことだったんだ。だって、ヒット曲を作ることはできても、一本のヒット映画に出演するのとしないのでは、意味が違うでしょう？」
