小池のデビューは17歳。
「巨乳タレントで終わらせる気なんてなかったよ」
と語るのは、かつて小池が所属した芸能事務所「イエローキャブ」の野田義治・元社長（76）である。
「本人も女優志望で、連ドラの脇役に使ってもらえたりしてたけど、仕事のない日が続いてね。“辞めて保育士になります”なんて言い出した。“グラビアなら1回でアルバイト1カ月分稼げるぞ”と言ってね。篠山紀信さんに撮ってもらった時は“仏にも般若にもなれる子だ”と感服したね」
そんな小池自身が女優として地歩を固める「大きな転換点になった」と語るのが、2011年公開の映画「八日目の蝉」への出演。「“芝居とは何ぞや”を叩きこんでくださった」と小池が謝辞を向けるその人、成島出監督によると、
「ちょうど栄子ちゃんが舞台も経験して難しい役に飢えていた時期で、演技に関するあれこれをスポンジのように吸収してましたね」

小池は、ある理由から誘拐された過去を持つ女性に取材を試みるフリーライター・安藤千草を演じるが、
「千草もまた、事情を抱えた女性たちが暮らす特殊な施設で幼少期を過ごした複雑な人物です。“千草は普段、どんな歩き方や話し方をしているんだろう。映画のシーンは彼女の一部でしかない。だから全体像を考えてみよう”と話し合いました。その結果が千草の猫背や独特な話し方に表れています。栄子ちゃんは脚本に忠実に演じることが多く、そうした役への入り込み方は初めてとのことでした」
この千草役はプロ筋からも称賛され、日本アカデミー賞優秀助演女優賞に輝いた。
「とにかく頭がよくて勉強家で、すさまじい努力家でもあって、セリフ覚えは完璧。“いつか中国映画に出たいんです”と言って、中国語の本を読んでいたことも」
と続ける成島監督。20年公開の「グッドバイ～嘘からはじまる人生喜劇」で再び小池を抜擢し、今度は大泉洋とのW主演と相成った。
