大人気マーベル映画「マイティ・ソー」シリーズで知られるクリス・ヘムズワースが、ディズニープラスで配信中のドキュメンタリーシリーズ「リミットレス with クリス・ヘムズワース」の撮影でアルツハイマー病を発症する可能性が高いという事実が判明したことを受け、俳優業を一時休業するつもりであることを明かした。
ダーレン・アロノフスキーが監督を務める「リミットレス with クリス・ヘムズワース」は、もしも老化現象に打ち勝ち、肉体が秘める最大の可能性を引き出せるとしたら？という問いかけのもと、ヘムズワースが自ら実験台となり、人体の限界に挑戦する6話構成のドキュシリーズ。
第5話でヘムズワースは、自身の遺伝的構成に母親と父親からひとつずつ受け継いだ2つの「APOE4」という遺伝子が含まれていることを知る。アメリカ国立衛生研究所が行なった最新の調査によると、
アルツハイマー病発症のリスクを高める性質を持つ同遺伝子を1つのみ保有する者が4人に1人であるのに対して、2つセットで保有する者は全体人口の2～3％と極めて珍しく、保有していない者と比べて発症する確率は8～10倍にもなるという。
米バニティ・フェア誌のインタビューで衝撃的事実が発覚した瞬間を振り返り、「それを聞いて、休みをとりたいと思ったんだ。番組の撮影を終えたあと、出演契約をしていた仕事も全て片付けたし、この宣伝ツアーが終わったら故郷に戻ってしばらく休みをとることにしたよ。
妻や子どもたちと一緒に、シンプルな生活を送るつもりだ」と一時休業を宣言したヘムズワースだが、「心配ではあるけれど、確実にアルツハイマーになると宣告されたわけではないし、俳優業かを引退するわけでもない」と断言。
また、問題のシーンを削除しようかという配給元ディズニーの申し出をキッパリ断ったことも明かしたヘムズワースは、「変にドラマチックな演出で同情を引こうとするのではなく、見た人たちがより入念な健康管理を心がけ、予防措置があるということを知るきっかけになるんだったら、是が非でも放送すべきだと思ったんだ」と語る。
「この番組でアルツハイマー病になるリスクが高いという事実を知らされたことで、睡眠や食事やストレスレベルといった生活習慣を見直すことができたのは、逆にラッキーだったと思っているよ。発症を防ぐために今から心がけておくべき事もたくさん学んだしね」。
