7. Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is
   at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first
   place hear themselves?

   In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against
   proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to
   support.

   The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals
   can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to
   prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually
   less than the major parties currently spend.

   The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for
   donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.

   So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while
   using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they
   can use their wealth at all will be limited.

   The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing
   the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be
   made.

   At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but
   you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later,
   well after elections are won and lost.

   In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency
   and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.

   Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and
   warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’ 

   Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot
   – saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT
   senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What seems to
   be happening is a major-party stitch-up’

   Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules,
   will need to disclose having done so. And how much they can donate will be capped.

   Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a
   ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’. 

   They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just
   might secure the support of the opposition.

   I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before
   even starting to write this column.

   Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency
   measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a
   united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.

   More fool me.

   The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

   It makes you wonder what they have to hide.
   Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

   Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer

   Another potential target of the laws is businessman and
   Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court

   The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary
   to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

   The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à
   Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals. 

   And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past,
   contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

   Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a
   mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.

   The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect
   immediately, by the way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power
   play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

   They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.

   Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done
   between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go
   over the laws with a fine tooth comb.

   As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create
   loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of,
   therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.

   But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed
   laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical
   opposition, to what is being advocated for.

   They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.

   To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

    and half that of its predecessor.

    Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth,
    in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical
    element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

    ‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100%
    as divisive as people are making it out to be. I love that the film didn’t
    try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
    It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

    Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s

17. July 23 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International pushed the test-launch of its heated tobacco device, IQOS, in the
    U.S. to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its annual forecast for the heated tobacco business.

    The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas, in the second quarter, for which the company
    reported results on the day.

    The company declined to comment on why the launch had been delayed.

    Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand its portfolio of alternatives to traditional combustible cigarettes amid
    stricter regulations and falling smoking rates in some markets.

    The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the United States
    is also facing resistance from health campaigners, who have written to regulators in the country accusing the company
    of misrepresenting past regulatory decisions, Reuters
    reported last week.

    The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.

    Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device, which it expects by the second half of 2025.

    A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year, with Philip Morris saying
    the impact from the ban was “slightly greater” than previously assumed.

    This led the company to temper its expectations for volume growth in the heated tobacco category
    to around 13% for the full year, down from between 14%
    and 16% expected earlier.

    However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised its annual
    sales and profit forecasts, betting on demand for its
    Zyn nicotine pouches, as well as higher cigarette pricing.

    Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said:
     ‘It’s the worst film ever made.

    ‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels.
    This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent
    the wrong kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism! All these think pieces.

    He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum,
    and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap
    and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d
    go, ‘This is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing
    I’ve ever seen.’

    ‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What
    is the plot? Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with
    her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable. That’s how terrible it is.’

    Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media
    after its release last month to defend the sequel
    to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

    The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic
    box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot,
    but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.

    Amid the early returns, a number of fans took
    up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the
    cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film,
    with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

    ‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be.
    I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed
    to the storytelling they presented. It never deviated to
    be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

    Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved
    how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the
    musical elements were a lot of fun.’

    The Greens leader has been outed as a member of the Qantas
    Chairman’s Lounge, an invitation-only set of catered
    waiting areas and services handed out by the airline in what has been called
    ‘Australia’s most exclusive club’.

    Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC Radio National stand-in host Steve Cannane that he was ‘enjoying free hospitality from a company that has illegally sacked hundreds of
    workers’.

    Mr Bandt replied: ‘And I’ll declare that and people can make their own judgement about what they think about that.’

    Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling that Qantas illegally sacked 1,700 workers at the start of the Covid pandemic in a case brought by Transport Workers Union. 

    Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020,

    of Qantas workers & their families’ in a Facebook post.
    ‘We’re thinking of you,’ he wrote.

    Mr Bandt said he always made declarations
    about matters such as this and argued that the party’s policies
    to tax big corporations heavily show the perks were
    not impacting the Greens.

    The partner of the ex-CEO of the Abercrombie and Fitch clothing line pleaded not guilty
    Tuesday in US federal court to charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution and was released on $10 million bond.

    fixer James Jacobson allegedly used a “casting couch” ploy to groom
    aspiring male models to attend sex parties at which
    victims were plied with alcohol and drugs.

    After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries, Smith was held in custody in New York.

    Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip on Long Island,
    to the east of New York City.

    Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up by
    Jeffries and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office for the eastern district of New York.

    An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what appeared
    to be a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to his ankle.

    Zelenskiy made the case on Monday for a diplomatic settlement to
    Russia’s war in Ukraine and raised the idea of foreign troops
    being deployed in his country until it could join the NATO military alliance.

    The remarks at a joint press conference with German opposition leader Friedrich Merz were the latest to signal Kyiv’s increasing openness to war negotiations,
    with Donald Trump preparing to return to the White House on Jan. 20.

    The U.S. president-elect, who has said he wants to
    end the war quickly, called on Sunday for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations to
    end the “madness”, after he met Zelenskiy and French President Emmanuel Macron for talks in Paris.

    “Ukraine wants this war to end more than anyone else. No doubt, a diplomatic resolution would save more lives. We do seek it,” Zelenskiy told reporters in Kyiv on Monday.

    He said he discussed a “freezing” of the lines in the war when he met Macron and Trump.

    Russia controls nearly a fifth of Ukrainian territory
    after launching the 2022 invasion that unleashed the biggest
    conflict in Europe since World War Two.

    Zelenskiy said he told the two leaders that he did not believe Putin actually wanted to end the war and that the Russian president would need to be forced.

    “You can only exert force if Ukraine is strong. A strong Ukraine before any diplomacy means a strong (Ukraine) on the battlefield,”
    he said, implying Kyiv needed help to become
    stronger.

    He received a rhetorical boost from Merz, the frontrunner in the election race
    to become Germany’s next chancellor, who used his
    visit to liken Berlin’s current policy to making
    Ukraine fight with one arm tied behind its back.

    FOREIGN TROOPS

    Zelenskiy also returned to an idea raised in February
    by Macron, who floated the possibility of European nations sending troops to Ukraine.

    There was no consensus on the matter among the European leaders.

    “We can think and work on Emmanuel’s position. He suggested that some part of troops of a country be present on the territory of Ukraine, which would guarantee us security while Ukraine is not in NATO,” Zelenskiy said.

    “But we must have a clear understanding of when Ukraine will be in the EU and when Ukraine will be in NATO,” he added.

    Kyiv, which has made a concerted push to obtain an invitation to join NATO, has insisted
    throughout the war that it needs security guarantees
    to prevent Russia launching another invasion once
    the current hostilities are halted.

    “If there is a pause while Ukraine is not in NATO, and even if we had the invitation, and we would not be in NATO, and there will be a pause, then who guarantees us any kind of security?” Zelenskiy asked
    at the press conference.

    Russia has demanded that Ukraine abandon its NATO ambitions and sees Kyiv’s membership of the alliance as an unacceptable security threat.

    The Ukrainian leader told reporters he was hoping to call
    outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden in the coming days to discuss NATO membership.

    “I intend to call President Biden in the coming time … and raise the question of an invitation to join NATO,” he said.

    He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from
    Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.

    “People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.

    “My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”

    So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute
    anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally —
    powers normally reserved to the border police who work
    for the federal government.

    “I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

    – Mixed impact –

    The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at

    But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House

    Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.

    Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong
    support and both appear likely to pass.

    So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny
    Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.

    Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.

    Though abortion is sometimes framed as a
    Democrat vs. Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,”
    she added.

    The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump
    Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said
    John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.

    The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial

41. LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated
    U.S. roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive for its competitors in the short term.

    The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two thirds of its net revenues to come
    from “smoke-free” products by 2030, up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its
    image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.

    Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into
    the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products, and had been expecting it from May 2024 next year.
    Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.

    states ahead of the launch.

    Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch
    in four cities in two unnamed U.S. states from 2024, but a national launch
    would only come after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.

    The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it from 2025, he
    continued.

    “We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial
    launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.

    A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding launching in 10
    states in the first year would make sense.

    Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
    “now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies,
    said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.

    Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no
    longer a priority. It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net
    revenues to come from sales of such products by 2025.

    Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.

    PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets for
    IQOS and ZYN.

    ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S.
    would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA,
    executives said.

    Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said: ‘It’s the worst film
    ever made.

    ‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was
    a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels. This was loved by
    the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong kind
    of message. Male rage! Nihilism! All these think pieces.

    Asylum, and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is
    going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’

    ‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
    Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’
    It’s not even hate-watchable. That’s how terrible it is.’

    Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media after
    its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

    The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections,
    and half that of its predecessor.

    Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce
    a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

    ‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be.
    I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
    It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing
    aspects.’

    Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the
    first film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

50. March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and
    rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.

    The company, which garnered around 6% its net
    revenue from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette products and
    canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.

    It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks, heated tobacco units intended for use with its
    IQOS ILUMA devices, as well as related investment of $150 million.
