米林監督は魔女という題材について、「もらった時は「え？」と思ったけれど、原作を読んだら面白い話でした。これを基にして今までとは違う、
全く新しい形のアニメーションができるんじゃないか？と」感じたという。そして「『思い出のマーニー』は僕自身すごく好きな作品で、
これで終わってもいいと思っていました。でも、もう１本作るのであれば全然違う作品を作って皆さんのイメージを裏切りたいという思いもあって。
『思い出のマーニー』は”静”の作品ですが、”動”の作品を作りたいと。マーニーが心の中を描いているので、今回は主人公の女の子メアリは躍動的で、
自分の意志で動き回るものにしたいと思いました。『借りぐらしのアリエッティ』『思い出のマーニー』同様に一人の少女のそばに立ちつつ、
観てくださった人にそっと寄り添って、少し背を押せるような作品を作りたいと思います。皆さんに楽しんでもらえるように頑張っています」。
