3. Joaquin Phoenix has revealed that he spoke with filmmaker Christopher Nolan about playing Joker which ultimately went to Heath Ledger.

   The 50-year-old actor – whose latest flick Joker: Folie À Deux
   could be streamed now – got candid about potentially playing the supervillain before
   he actually portrayed him.

   Joaquin recently appeared on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast as
   he revealed that he spoke to the 54-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker Nolan about portraying Joker over a decade
   before.

   He said: That didn’t… wasn’t going to happen for a number of reasons.
   I wasn’t ready then.

   ‘That’s one of those things sometimes where you go: “Why am I not doing this project? What is stopping me from doing this? Well it’s not about me, there’s something else. There’s another person that’s going to do something that’s like, I can’t imagine what it would be if we didn’t have Heath Ledger‘s performance in that film.”‘

   The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.

   It would need to gross about $450 million at the
   box office to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.
   sources claim the number is $375 million.

   A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous
   “insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and
   continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’

   ‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included
   with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’

   So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

   In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically
   and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.

   The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019
   billion dollar Oscar-winning film was considered a surefire hit for
   Warner Bros Pictures, yet ended up being slammed by critics and

   James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent
   from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month. 

   A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150
   [million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

   In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of
   the film does not include a DC Studios logo.

   A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of
   the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined
   to comment to the publication.

   Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with
   claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
   Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

   It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy
   rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months
   before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

   Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for
   the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter:
   ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
   movie.’

   Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles
   if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

   The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

   A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one thing about genre
   stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations
   are, you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at
   the LA premiere September 30

   However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

   A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

   A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No

   Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere
   the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips

   decision to bring the film to Venice. 

   Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include
   Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

   Feb 8 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International on Thursday missed
   estimates for fourth quarter profit and forecasts for 2024, with slowing sales of its flagship heated tobacco product IQOS in particular concerning analysts.

   The Marlboro cigarette maker has so far led a transition among
   tobacco giants towards smoking alternatives, with IQOS at the core of
   that effort, consuming the vast majority of over $10 billion PMI has poured into its transformation since 2008.

   It said on Thursday that shipments of heated tobacco units grew by 6.1% in the fourth quarter, compared with 18% growth in the third quarter.

   Philip Morris added that it expected a further hit
   to shipments over the coming year as a result of a
   ban on flavoured heated tobacco in the European Union.

   Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said however IQOS had now surpassed Marlboro in terms of net revenues.

   “We are entering 2024 with strong momentum,” he said in a statement.

   Any sustained slowdown in IQOS sales was a problem for Philip Morris given its significance for the
   business and the company’s premium relative to peers, analysts said.

   But Mark Giambrone, a portfolio manager at Barrow Hanley, a sub-adviser to American Beacon’s Large Cap Value Fund which invests in PMI, was not
   too concerned.

   IQOS is set to test launch in the United States, the world’s largest market for smoking
   alternatives, this year with a full roll-out later.

   “When that happens it will be a boon for the stock and for their earnings base,” Giambrone said.

   The company’s shares fell 3%, but recovered to stand around 1.6% lower by 11:20 a.m.
   ET (1620 GMT).

   PMI reported fourth-quarter adjusted profit of $1.36 per share.

   Analysts had on average had expected a profit of $1.45.

   It expects adjusted annual profit of between $6.32 and $6.44 per share, while analysts were expecting $6.60 per share, LSEG data showed.

9. Six months after making its world premiere at the Bentonville Film Festival, The Seven Faces Of Jane
   has dropped in select theaters and VOD.

   And as part of promotion some of the cast and crew
   for the anthology film were on hand for the West Coast premiere in Los
   Angeles on Friday night.

   The movie consists of eight short films, all of which star Gillian Jacobs as the
   title character.

   The anthology has eight different directors, including Jacobs along
   with Ken Jeong, Gia Coppola, Ryan Heffington, Alexandra Cassavetes,
   Boma Iluma, Julian Acosta and Alex Takacs.

    One way to understand it is to look at a crack in the sidewalk (or perhaps a cracker) and compare that shape to the path of a lightning stroke through the sky.

    Now that I have learnt this information I want to share it with those
    who were like me and didn’t understand the extent of animal cruelty
    in countries around the world,’ she said,

    ‘I am going to do everything in my power to try and stop this madness
    in the world. It honestly just broke my heart.
    Since seeing this animal cruelty firsthand, and now understanding it,
    I am doing all that I can to educate myself on these horrible topics.’

    Rory claimed the monkeys were kept in terrible conditions, deprived of food and smacked and beaten repeatedly
    so they behaved and took photos with tourists.

    ‘These imprisoned animals show signs of extreme anger, stress, depression & disease
    and sometimes they even have open wounds on their bodies and unless we speak up for the voiceless, nothing will change,’ she wrote. 

    The influencer begged her followers to share her post
    with their followers, friends and family, celebrities and other content creators so they could get the Thai government to end their ‘abusive wildlife tourism industry’.

    Social media users flooded Rory’s posts with supportive comments. 

    ‘Oh god this breaks my heart, that baby monkey didn’t want you to leave it,’ one said.

    ‘You made the baby feel safe. You’ve learned a horrible lesson,
    by sharing you are educating others. You’re a good person,’ a second wrote. 

    A third shared: ‘These things are constantly happening without public awareness or approval.
    thank you so so so much for spreading awareness.’

    ‘I have stopped going to zoo or aquarium because these
    are not the place where they are supposed to be. Thanks for
    speaking up,’ a fourth commented. 

    The Phuket Monkey Show has temporarily disabled new reviews due to ‘a recent
    event that has attracted media attention and has caused an influx
    of review submissions that do not describe a first-hand experience’. 

    The influencer had been travelling with her family in Thailand when she decided to take the opportunity to hold a
    baby monkey. She said she saw ‘animal cruelty first hand’

    The show is just one of many places that mistreat animals for the entertainment of
    visiting tourists, in particular monkeys and elephants. 

    In some instances, monkeys can be forced to ride bikes, jump through hoops,
    box each other, or dance while wearing tight restraints. 

    Head of Campaigns at World Animal Protection, Suzanne Milthorpe, said animals that could be ridden, touched or held it has probably been mistreated. 

    ‘The golden rule to follow is if you can hold, touch, or ride a wild animal, it has likely experienced some form of
    cruelty to make it submissive enough to allow for human interaction,’ she told
    Yahoo News Australia. 

    Ms Milthorpe urged tourists to do their research before partaking in animal-related activities to avoid contributing to wildlife exploitation.   

    An eye-watering 11.15 tourists visited Thailand in 2022, with about 800,000 Australians travelling to the popular tourist destination pre-pandemic.

    The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around Victoria
    to help shoppers get through the cost of living crisis ravaging the country.

    Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society, is a charity that works to
    provide support and assistance to people in need.

    Most items are brand new stock donated by corporate partners including Christmas decorations.

    Popular bargains include $10 large jars of Biscoff, $2
    bags of Red Rock Deli chips, and discounted shoes from Boston Bros. 

    Shoppers will find men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes from
    top brands, and even electrical goods at the Vinnies pop-up locations. 

    Many have purchased vacuums, air fryers, Adidas shoes, printers,
    and kitchen knives from previous pop-up shops. 

    There is presently a location in Ascot Vale which is open until 3 November, and
    another in Boronia which will remain open until Christmas – or until stock runs out.

    We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and the man behind
    Sillfield Farm, who has invited me up to cook at the Westmorland County
    Show; also chef Phil Vickery, who certainty knows his alliums; and the force
    of nature that is Lorraine Stanton, something of a legend around these parts.

    But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked Mrs Kirkham’s cheese soufflé, the texture as light
    as a sigh, the flavour profoundly, lasciviously rich. Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by
    her son Graham, is one of the world’s great cheeses, and this is a soufflé of
    quiet majesty. A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing to be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black
    pudding with bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way
    of Lewis.

    There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision.
    Duck à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp,
    the sauce just the right side of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump
    of lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of gravies;
    by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.

    Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp,
    with damson sorbet (this part of the Lake District is famed for its damsons); along with a
    banana soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep into its molten centre.
    This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the sort of pub designed for
    lingering. It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early
    start. But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.
