ウォルト・ディズニー・カンパニーの初期の映画が日本で見つかった。
ミッキー・マウスの前任ともいえるオズワルド・ザ・ラッキー・ラビットが主人公の2分間の短編作品だ。
アニメ史研究家の渡辺泰さん（84）は、失われた7本の映画のうちの1つだと気付かずに、このアニメ作品を70年にわたり持っていた。
渡辺さんは、10代の頃にこの映画を大阪のおもちゃの問屋からわずか500円で購入した。
「Neck’n’ Neck（互角）」という原題の16ミリの映画は、日本語で「ミッキー漫画スピーデー」と名前が付けられており、渡辺さんが個人的に収集したコレクションの中に70年間残っていた。
渡辺さんがこの映画の重要性に気付いたのは、長年ディズニーでアニメーターをしているデイブ・ボッサート氏が執筆し、昨年出版された「Oswald the Lucky Rabbit: The Search for the Lost Disney Cartoons（オズワルド・ザ・ラッキー・ラビット：失われたディズニー・アニメーションを探して）」を読んだ時だ。
「長年のディズニーファンなのでお役に立ててうれしい」と渡辺さんは朝日新聞に語った。朝日新聞は米国のディズニー・アーカイブスに問い合わせ、この作品が失われた一握りのオズワルド映画の1つであることを確認している。
創業者のウォルト・ディズニー氏はアブ・アイワークス氏と共に1927年、オズワルド・ザ・ラッキー・ラビットを作り、ディズニー・スタジオ初のシリーズもののキャラクターとなった。
オズワルドの出演作は27本作られたが、擬人化されたうさぎのキャラクターは知的財産権争いの中心となり、オズワルドの著作権を巡って1928年、ユニバーサル・スタジオと争った。
これを受け、ディズニーは新しい主要キャラクターを作り始めた。これが後にミッキー・マウスとして知られるようになる。オズワルドはそのままの状態で取り残されたが、ディズニーのボブ・アイガー最高経営責任者（CEO）が2006年、権利を買い戻した。
「この話で特にいい点は、これらの映画が世界中に散らばっていることを示唆する点だ」とBBCに話すのは、英国映画協会（BFI）でアニメーション管理を担当するジェズ・スチュワートさんだ。
「映画が世界中にどのように伝えられ、最終的にどこに行き着くのかは、作品そのものと同じくらい興味深い」
2015年には、オズワルドが主役の別のアニメ作品がBFIの保管庫で見つかっている。
スチュワートさんは、こうした発見は重要だと語るが、初期のアニメーション作品に関して言えば、全体の一部分にすぎないと語る。例えばオズワルドが米国で制作されていた時期と同じくして、英国ではボンゾ犬が映画の中で非現実的な冒険をしていた。
