本作は、本橋信宏著『全裸監督 村西とおる伝』（太田出版）を実写化。アダルトビデオ草創期の1980年代に“AVの帝王”と呼ばれた村西とおると仲間たちを中心に、村西を利用しようとする者や敵対する者、警察などとの攻防をユーモアたっぶりに描くエンターテインメント作品。Netflixオリジナルシリーズの制作で、総監督を映画『百円の恋』『銃』の武正晴が務める。
満島は村西の相棒的存在・荒井トシ、玉山は村西が裏社会で躍進するきっかけを作る出版社社長・川田研二をそれぞれ演じる。また、新星・森田望智が、厳格な母親を前に本当の自分をさらけ出せず苦悩する大学生で、後に村西がAVの帝王となる最大の要因と言っても過言ではないAV女優・黒木香を、まさに体当たりの演技で挑んでいる。
このほか、柄本時生、伊藤沙莉、冨手麻妙、後藤剛範、吉田鋼太郎、板尾創路、余貴美子、小雪、リリー・フランキー、國村隼、石橋凌といった個性豊かな名優たちが名を連ね、山田演じる“村西”に負けないキャラクターの濃さで、『全裸監督』の世界に彩りを与える。
