恐竜と似た声の動物が人類と共存、5万年前に絶滅
トランペットのような声を出す頭骨の構造が恐竜そっくり、ケニアで発掘
地質年代からすれば“つい最近”の5万年前までケニアに生きていたヌーに似た哺乳類。新たな化石から、恐竜に似た器官を使ってトランペットのような音を出していたことが明らかになった。
氷期だった7万5000～5万年前のケニア、ビクトリア湖のルシンガ島に、学名 Rusingoryx atopocranion （ルシンゴリクス・アトポクラニオン）という動物が生きていた。
当時、島は一面乾いた草地。従来、この種は頭骨の一部のみが産出していたが、最近になって骨や歯を多量に含む地層が見つかり、誰も予想しなかった奇妙な姿が明らかになった。
ルシンガ島での最新の発掘により、ルシンゴリクス6頭分の頭骨が産出。幼獣から成獣までそろっており、初めてほぼ完全な化石が入手できた。
米オハイオ大学の古生物学者で、今回の論文の筆頭著者であるヘイリー・オブライエン氏は、「初めて見たときには、開いた口が塞がりませんでした」と振り返る。
この研究は、ナショナル ジオグラフィック協会研究・探検委員会が支援している。
